For the second year in a row Baloubet du Rouet figured prominently in the results. This time it was a grandson Watch Out by Balou du Rouet, which finished first over all. This elegant chestnut four year old Dutch registered stallion excelled in both jumping and gaits, receiving an over all index of 126.99. He placed first in both sub categories jumping and dressage. Owned by Victoria and Mark Dakus of Prince George, B.C. and presented by Grand Prix rider, Tammie Philips, we can expect a prominent show career for this horse.
Watch Out was originally imported and presented for licensing by Jon and Jackie van den Bosch. Adding to their long line of successes at the SPT, was also the Reserve Champion Whirlwind II (pictured at left) by Haarlem bred by the van den Boschs and owned by Jennette and Mara Coote of MJ Farms. Placing second in the dressage phase and third in the jumping, this dark brown Canadian Warmblood registered stallion received an overall index of 117.58. Whirlwind II was one of three CWHBA registered stallions participating in the test.

In the end all eight stallions received indexes sufficient for performance approval with the CWHBA. This was consistent with the overall quality of performance by all stallions. Hokan Wahlman, who returned to the SPT for a third time, commented that the preparation and performance has improved greatly. Hendrik Gaeble, test trainer, felt that given the excellent preparation and the high level of professionalism of the riders, he did not have as much work to do this time.
Hi-lighting our guest test riders, was Pan Am Games Silver Medalist, Sandra Donnelly. She and FEI level dressage competitor, Sanna Hodgson handled the gaits under saddle. Calgary area coach and competitor, Gaia Parker and up and coming young Grand Prix rider, Brain Morton from Vancouver, evaluated the stallions over fences. Scoring rideability on a variety of horses over a short period of time can be challenging, the consistency in the comments and scores however proved the professionalism of the riders.
Katrina van den Bosch, test manager and her crew are to be congratulated on a well run test. In spite of some major construction, which is going on to upgrade the Olds Agricultural Society facilities, the test ran without a problem. The new dome arena, and stabling will be a real asset in future years.
The Canadian National Stallion Performance Test is operated by the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Society. Run on a European format with international judges and indexed scoring, it is open to all breeds. It is run with financial support from the Canadian Breeders Initiative Fund which is administered by Equine Canada.Following the German format, indexes were calculated within the group to provide for an overall general index (GI), a dressage index (DR I), and a jumping index (JU I). A total of 20 different scores covering Interior Characteristics, Gaits, Rideability and Jumping were used.
Please note that indexes are specific to the year and the horses participating - they cannot be compared from one year to another.
