FEATURE HORSE April 11, 2008: SIERRA SPRINGS (Silberpfiel x Steelbars Monique / Maestro), AB-[CAN]5666-07 G

With foaling season started, it seemed appropriate to feature last year's Alberta Southern Foal Futurity winner. Sierra Springs, a bay filly owned and bred by Cynthia Adams in Olds, Alberta, went on to win Grand Champion Young Horse. This athletic filly is sired by the late Holsteiner stallion 'Silberpfiel' out of the Canadian Warmblood dam 'Steelbars Monique'. Photo credit: Llana McCowan

CWHBA going forward with bi-lateral APA discussions!

April 11, 2008: Three years after the ‘Sport Horse Canada’ concept received unanimous support, multi-lateral talks with the Federal government and breeders of sport horses have been wound up. Since the February 6th meeting in Calgary, the Canadian Sport Horse Association (CSHA), has formally withdrawn from any further amalgamation discussions.
At the February 6th meeting it became clear to all present, that the two associations were pursuing different breeding goals with different breeding philosophies.

The breeding philosophies may be summarized as follows:

1. CWHBA - since its inception, has been building a Warmblood breeding organization that is congruent with European methods, standards and practice. It has been the association’s goal to register only Canadian-born Warmblood horses, providing registration papers, stud book levels, and grading systems that permit reciprocity with our European counter parts. In short, we do not want to produce a new horse, The CWHBA’s goal is to produce the best Warmblood horse!
2. CSHA - in contrast, the CSHA has the goal of producing a new unique made in Canada sport horse. While this is a laudable goal, it is not the CWHBA goal. At present, Warmblood horses are one of several contributing breeds that form their foundation pool.
Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada (AAFC) has expressed concern about the degree of overlap between the two associations. That point of overlap is now the focus for future negotiations among the three parties. It is clear that any new breed must use existing breeds to provide the parental stock. The questions include: how quickly can an evolving breed achieve an F4 population and begin to reduce the overlap, as well as, how are percentage animals managed within a distinct breed registry.
Regarding questions particular to Warmblood horses, the CWHBA will now return to bi-lateral discussions with the AAFC, to address specific by-laws or procedures where improvements may be needed. The CWHBA has put forward a number of proposals, which will be explored with department officials.
