Registration Trouble Shooting
Registration can be a daunting task. This is a quick way to answer most registration questions. If at any time you need extra assistance, please contact the CWHBA National Office.
TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP - Send the ORIGINAL registration certificate, a signed transfer of ownership form or a copy of a bill of sale from the last documented owner and $30.00 (tax exempt) to the National Office in Saskatoon.
- 'I don't have the original registration certificate' - If you do not have the original registration certificate or it has been lost, then we require a NOTARIZED AFFIDAVIT stating the circumstances of how the cerificate was lost. The fee for a reissue is $50.00
- 'Can I change my horses name at the time of transfer of ownership' - Yes, you can change the name at any time. Send the original reigstration certificate and a note stating the change of name. Fee $15.00
REGISTRATION - To ensure that you have the proper documents, please follow the steps 1-8
1) Are you a current CWHBA regular member?
YES - Go to 2
NO - Complete a Membership Application Form. Fee $70 - annual; $700 - lifetime
2) Are/were you the current documented Owner of the Dam (at the time of foaling)?
YES - Go to 3
NO - Follow these instructions
- If you have purchased the dam (not registered or entered with the CWHBA) but are not the listed owner on the registration papers, then you must provide a copy of a bill of sale.
- If you have purchased the dam (CWHBA registered or entered) but are not the listed owner on the registration papers, then you must provide a copy of a bill of sale or a signed transfer of ownership, the original entry or registraiton papers and $30 transfer fee.
- If you do not own the dam, please have the owner complete a lease agreement. Fee $20.00
- If you have just purchased the foal then you will need a signed transfer of ownership for the foal only. Fee $30.00
3) Is the dam (mother) entered in the CWHBA Stud Book?
YES - Go to 4
NO -
- Fill out an application for PEDIGREE APPROVAL AND STUD BOOK ENTRY.
- Submit a legible photocopy of both sides of her registration papers with markings in English and approval scores (if any).
- If she does not have registration papers or if you are not listed as the owner on the reverse of the papers, then please provide a copy of a bill of sale.
- Fee $45.00

4) Is the Sire entered into the CWHBA Stud Book as an Approved or Licensed Stallion?
YES -You will use the Yellow Fee box below
NO - You will use the Blue Fee box below.

***if the stallion is APPROVED with another organization but not entered into the CWHBA Stud Book, please contact the National Office to review your options.
5) Do you have a Breeding Certificate?
YES - Go to 6
NO - You will need to contact the stallion owner or the person that inseminated the mare. They will need to sign the breeding certificate and list all of the insemination dates.

6) Foal Registration Applcation - Complete the foal registration.
Was the foal identified PRIOR to weaning?
YES - Great! Go to 7
NO -
- You will need to have a DNA Parentage verification completed on the foal.
- Print off and complete this application.
- Send form and cheque for $60.00 to the National Office following the instructions, affix hair and they will send to SRC. It will take about a month to get the results.
I DON'T KNOW - On the reverse (or second page of the CWHBA registration form is a foal identification page. This page should be completed when the foal is still at the Dam's side. It can either be completed by your veterinarian or by a licensed CWHBA foal identifier. If it was not completed see NO above.
YES - send a completed signed transfer of ownership with the registration papers or Application for Registration. Fee $30.00
NO - Go to Fee Schedule below
8) Fee Schedule:
Foals by an APPROVED OR LICENSED STALLION, Entered in the CWHBA Stud Book.
FOAL (one year from foal's date of birth)
eg. June 12, 2007 -June 11, 2008$85.00 **PENALTY** will be added once the horse reaches one year of age $75.00 Foals by a NON APPROVED/NON LICENSED STALLION or by a stallion NOT ENTERED into the CWHBA Stud Book.
FOAL (one year from foal's date of birth)
eg. June 12, 2007 -June 12, 2008$185.00 **PENALTY** will be added once the horse reaches one year of age $75.00
